DANICA PHELPS

Protection Project
As the pandemic has been ravaging the world at lightening speed, I have been sitting here in my studio trying to make my small contribution to the community effort to protect those who are most vulnerable (prisoners, residents at homeless shelters, firefighters, indigenous populations, etc).  I do not know how to sew, but I have been cutting lots and lots of material for those who are making masks for these groups.  I have been gathering fabric left over from projects of both friends and strangers in the community and cutting it to the right size for weeks now.  I have become enamored with the beautiful fabrics and the way it paints a kind of picture of my community.  I wanted to make a project about this effort to protect.

Each person who joins this project will expand the net of protection that will sustain the art world that we love. There will be 51 generations of this drawing, starting from the first which is a very modest 7,62 cm x 7,62 cm, expanding to a final 76,2 cm x 76,2 cm in as the 51st person joins in. Each person who joins is documented within the next generation of the drawing.  Through this drawing, a community of protection will form.

Protection Project

Regarding Danica Phelps work
Drawings and graphics are the basis of Danica Phelp’s (New York 1971) work. Through them the artist depicts her daily routine, and with the graphics the expenses and incomes, reflected with notes and small red and green watercolour lines, as in an abacus.

Her work expresses in this way her obsession, to remember time with her drawings and reflect her personal diary on them.

This has led the artist to create second generation drawings, second versions of the sold drawings, in which she adds the amount received for the first drawing, the moment in which it was sold and to whom it was sold, questioning the privacy of the collector. These second generation drawings are followed by third, fourth and so on. All to keep a diary of her life and artistic career.
